Suomenlinna – the Finnish fortress island (UNESCO) One of the most popular tourist attractions in Helsinki is the beautiful UNESCO world heritage island of Suomenlinna, the biggest fortress island in Europe. Suomenlinna also known as the „Gibraltar of the North“ can easily be reached by taking the ferry from the Market Square in around 15 minutes. Consisting of 6 separate islands the fortification has a lot of attractions to offer like e.g. defensive walls, cannons, embrasures, exciting tunnels, interesting museums and beautiful parks, a perfect place to enjoy a picnic with friends or why not relax at the attractive beach. The fortress island is the permanent residence for about 900 persons, some of them artists for whom the island serves as a source of inspiration.
